Jamie Howell

Born in the United States and raised in Brazil and Texas, Jamie came to California in 1966 as a lead guitar player in a rock and roll band. He met his wife, Heidi, while performing at the Avalon Ballroom and they have been together since. They have 3 children and 3 grandchildren. Jamie began his Zen practice with Joshu Sasaki on Mt. Baldy in the late 70's. He started studying with Michael Wenger at SFZC in 1983 and was Shuso in 2005. In 2011, Jamie received Dharma Entrustment from Michael Wenger. He has given Dharma talks, classes and workshops at SFZC, Dragon's Leap Hermitage and Tassajara. Since receiving Entrustment, he has returned to both Brazil (where he worked with Monja Coen) and Texas (where he gave dharma talks to groups from Lubbock to San Antonio). Beginning with the Pandemic, he has rekindled his Koan study with Rachel Mansfield-Howlett.
